meet timmy

while cutting some brush for a dog thoroughfare i spotted a terrapin. kassi was flitting across the pallet wall that contains the pigs. her balance is amazing. i reached down in the thicket, picked him up and held him high. i got the look of amazement and glee from kassi.

it took him a while to get comfortable and come out of his shell.

we are on a strict homeschooling catch and release program. we observe any benign animal and release it back where we got it from. timmy as kassi named him needed a new home.

he wouldn't be safe where the dogs have access. i pity any animal that interlopes their domain.

in the gods must be crazy fashion everyone seemed to need timmy the turtle. i felt that timmy's life might be in jeopardy. his release was premature for everyone except timmy.

good bye timmy, may you have a long and happy life.

  1. heh... that's awesome. I see tons of turtles crossing the roads here now. Fortunately, there is at least one less redneck on our road, greatly increasing their odds of survival.

    Live long and prosper, Timmy.

  2. oh hahaa....two years ago a neighbor rang our bell...and said "i presume this is yours" since we have the habitat signs and a zillion pets...and it was a HUGE turtle. I think he found our little oasis in the burbs ( he must have heard our pond)...we named him Garcia. He stayed for a while,....then said "garciaya later" and disappeared :-(

  3. Karl,

Yes, the turtles are on the move.
Across the river from you (west central Ill.) I've seen as many as 10 crossing the road or smushed on the road during a single short trip. My 'personal' experience, though, was of this tiny little mutt about the size of a 50 cent piece (are you even old enough to have seen a 50 cent piece? ...are they still around?) I found in a mudhole in the driveway. I picked it up and brought it in for a bit to watch it paddle around in a cereal bowl while I was on the computer, then took it out to a much more substantial mudhole where I hoped it would be safe from the chickens, which is how I imagine it got into a pothole in the driveway in the first place. As you said...make yer way little turtle and have the best life you can for as long as you can. It ain't easy out there.

  4. Sure wish there were more people like you and the commenters here. There are people here that go out of their way to hit turtles. We were out the other day and helped 2 turtles cross the road and one was nearly crushed by 3 or 4 cars before I got to it. Thank goodness we spotted it in time. The county I live in recently prosecuted 2 box turtle poachers that were illegally trapping them and transporting them to southern states to sell as pets. They got a hefty fine and jail time.

    See ya later Timmy!

  5. Beautiful turtle; I love seeing them around too, just not when they eat strawberries! I remember painting various colored dots on some as a boy, to see if we would find them again. Saw one 3-4 years later at one point...

  6. david, we try to keep all wild animals out of the house. i can't imagine how many escaped creatures would ramble our floors otherwise.

jenny, yeah we have a bunch of jerks here too. once i saw a car swerve to hit one just in front of me. i followed them to the gas station any it was a seemingly nice old lady. you never know.

beau, what a great idea. we should get some nail polish or something and start naming them. it will be a fun decade long project.
