pasteurized homogenized

kassi is allergic to regular milk. she can't control her bladder properly when she drinks it. kassi loves milk. we have stumbled across a couple of solutions.

janet, our friend bought our goats back in partial trade for cows milk. i'll pick up milk on wednesdays and everything will be fine for a while. that should be enough for the kids and some of that delicious cream for tabithas and my coffee.
the second solution will be much more long term. our new friends darla and lance are buying the mother of their jersey heifer. they want tabitha to milk her after they take the calf away and share the milk. keeping our fingers crossed that it all works out. we don't know how she'll be to milk--tabitha is very optimistic.

bathroom progress as screeched to a halt. the vet bills took all of our money for the next while.

the root cellar has also stopped. my wine bottle source gave them all to their wine making friend. i might go to the local restaurant and bar to see if they have any jake bottles that they can spare.

i have monday off so a good garage cleaning might be in order.

I had an interesting conversation with the young man who was bagging my groceries the other day. The milk I buy is from a local dairy. It comes to the store in glass bottles. It is pasteurized, but it's as close to "natural" as I can get in a store around here. Anyway, he said that it was good milk, and I agreed, but added that raw milk would be better, and he said, "You've had raw milk?!"

I thought it was a little sad, but I had to remind myself that my girls have never had raw milk either. It's just not very common for people to want unpasteurized milk. That's what I said - they pasteurize the milk to kill the bacteria so that it won't spoil as quickly (theoretically), and then we add the bacteria back into the milk to make yogurt. Funny.

I think it's pretty awesome, and I hope your children appreciate, that you are able to give them such an unadulterated diet.

wendy, the lengths we go to get raw milk are daunting. definitely not for everyone. although you might be surprised, there could be a raw milk very near you. try rawmilk.org they have local listings for the entire us. it is never a store purchase, usually involves visiting the dairy. a weekly dairy visit can be a fun thing too.

an interesting fact: a baby calf will get the scours and die if fed only pasteurized milk.

that is all the proof we need to realize that pasteurization kills something very important.

How is Nimue doing? I hope she is continuing to recover.

nimue is doing better. we are taking the calf off her today. we need to go get teat infusions that stay in her so she doesn't get mastitis again. that bad calf is making her teats raw and little cuts in them. plus, she'll regain condition faster if that calf isn't on her.
