part two square bale feeder

today i worked half of the day at bobs so this is only a few hours progress on the do-it-yourself square bale feeder. so far i have spent $20 dollars on it. but still need to get hinges. i have a few resources that i'll try before i pay full price...

here it is without the door or ridge cap.

today i put on the condenstion barrier (billboard tarp), perlines, steel roof and hardware cloth screen bottom. here is a close up of the bottom.

here is a side shot. the dog is there for size. you figure out who it is for the dog or the feeder.

cute isn't it?

this is the wood left over from my $20 investment. i had the sheet of plywood. it was left over from some cement work my neighbor was doing.

this is the pile of scrap. the kids will play with it for a few more days then it will become kindling.

this it the billboard tarp condensation barrier. plus this is re-used steel so a little extra protection can't hurt.

tomorrow i should conclude my build your own small square bale feeder project. except for the painting..

Hi Karl! I found your blog from Ron at Hickory Hills, and I've enjoyed reading it.

Anyway, I think you might lose a lot of hay/chaff/crap in those little holes in the wire mesh. If you do, and it bugs you, then try adding a piece of plywood (or better yet, untreated wood planks) for the floor. Last year I made a hay feeder for my horses and I used plywood for the base. My feeder worked well enough.

I hope yours works out just fine as is, and I hope you update after the winter and let us know how well it worked!

funder, thanks we have another feeder and the cows don't eat the chaff/dust and it just gets moldy. as for seed heads i'd like them to get scattered to re seed my fields. thanks for the comment.

here is a nice bit of political info

Cool! The fort/clubhouse is almost done! Or, is that the cabin where I'll live?

Your cows won't eat chaff - how funny! (We horse people tend to assume cows eat EVERYTHING; I"m glad I'm learning more about them every day.)

Interesting link. I'm a quiet but hard-core feminist, and lately I've been thinking a lot about the parallels between blacks and women. And feeling much sympathy for black women, who get the worst possible deal. :-/
