can't buy bright paint without complaint

why is is that people feel the need to discourage us whenever we plan to purchase brightly colored and vibrant paint? "oh you probably better take those paint chips home and view them in your house." or "are you sure you want that color?" or "nobody paints their buildings that color." or "this color will make your room look smaller." we love our bright colors and will never be dissuaded by the local self professed interior designer working at home depot.

in true omelay fashion we needed to get the kids involved.

the paint is gloriously bright.

toly was especially excited to paint. he even followed my instructions very closely.

wax on, wax off...

after everyone got plenty of paint on each other we shuffled them to a hot bubble bath.

tabitha and i finished the walls first coat and painted the ceiling (white). we sat back as the sun set and watched our room glow from the natural light. even this morning we are still excited about our new color.

it snowed yesterday morning. very cold burrrr.

henry is completely unfazed by the cold. it is all fun and games when a boy enters the yard.

livestock guarding duties are postponed until further notice. that is, until i appear to get ready to feed him then he promptly runs to the most immediately threatening corner of the paddock and barks at the air. he does this to show that he has been doing his job well and acts a self promotion role. i encourage these quirks.

i wonder if his fur will always stay this soft. he is like a big teddy bear. well, HUGE teddy bear. i picked him up the other day and guess he weighs 120 lbs. as i recall his parents were about four inches taller at the shoulder than he is now. i can't imagine how much he'll weight when he is full grown? his parents were rail thin and expected to hunt for part of their food. we are just happy to have him well fed and diligently guarding our homestead.

i love bright colors as well and got a lot of flack for colors we chose but i think they look great. who would not want bright, vibrant colors? I don't get the whole white/beige things. besides white get really dirty. looks like fun.

Perhaps because the colors were burn out their eyes leaving them blind and fumbling around your house like dispossessed spirits trying to find their way back home again. At least that is what it does for me. :) I prefer muted tones for my rooms. But, fortunately it is a somewhat free country and you can dye your hair pink and paint your walls vivid red until the fashion police choke on their own bile! Viva la difference!

LOVE the colors. I've been following your awesome blog for some time now, but the paint made me come out to comment. Great choice, and I love how the kids got to help!

You probably remember that post FC put up a few weeks ago about the bright colors he painted his house. It looks like a happy place to me. I have one room in my house that has no outside light, and I tried painting it a green that would glow with light. Didn't work out too well, so I tried a more muted color.

As for your 120 pound puppy, we're hoping that our new dog never gets beyond 5 pounds.

I am so with you on the bright colors. We have a red kitchen and yellow dining room and are about to color our hall that same orange. Those are great pictures of the kids.

I understand folks around those parts still don't approve of anything colored...read into that what you want.

I'm totally with you on the colors! When we painted our office/homeschool room red, people said,"You and your colors." all discouraging-like. Besides, feng shui encourages the use of color! (that's all I know about feng shui!)

When we had finally decided on the color of our house and went to the home improvement store to get the stain (not paint), the guy tried to talk us out of it. He said our house would look like a pumpkin. I wanted to tell him to mind his business. It wasn't his house, afterall!

I'm planning to repaint my dining room in some bright orange/yellow color, because it gets the afternoon sun, and I just KNOW the room would glow with the right color. I hate the sea foam green color it is right now. Not my choice, and I've never liked it.

I would love to see your finished walls. It looks like the kids had a blast ;). You're much braver than I in that respect.

Excellent! I know the kids had a blast and it was no doubt good for them to take ownership too! Cool color!

Oh wow, excellent! I think folks should always get out of the neutral box and stop conforming to imaginarity "rules of decorating" when it's their own space. Color is such a personal preference and a real shot in the arm! As our daughter grew up, we'd paint her room any color she really wanted...after all, it's just paint! She loved rich purples and bright blues and is the only kid who would request "cerulean blue," holding up a magic marker and pointing to the exact color. So I painted her walls all those colors at once, starting from one shade lower down and painting the next a little higher up till all the colors reached the edge near the ceiling. Then I feathered the edges in and it was this awesome rippling room of every blue and purple. Then we put about a hundred very tiny glow in the dark stars on the ceiling from those stick-on constellation sets. You should have heard the warnings we got about "resale value" and dark colors making the room too small, etc. Well, hey, WE actually LIVE in the house...not Martha Stewart :) I have to have golds and reds and blues somewhere in my house for it to feel like my own, and it really does something for my mood. Great job on the painting, you guys...love seeing the kids getting in on the action :)
