new tile

we got the new tile for the bathroom last night. it is beautiful beyond expectations. we were so excited to see it that we took a special trip to branson to retrieve them. the color matching can now start in earnest. we envision an all yellow bathroom--rich marigold. the accents will be white and red. the bottom of the be claw-foot tub will be red and most everything else will be white. of course our new toilet seat will match also.
we are so excited.

Have you talked more on your blog about the tub failure that led to the damage to the floor? Was it a problem enherent to the tub, its installation, its age? What kind of tub was it? From that one picture it looks like a fiberglass tub shower, but I vaguely remember it being mentioned as a cast iron or steel tub in the past.

Just think about the bathroom I am continuing to redo. After five years, completely gutting the whole room down to the studs and floor joists, we again have a working bathroom. But I am still finishing the details....

You said you are replacing the underlayment under the tub. Have you thought about going with a suspended slab (2 - four inch layer of concrete floor poured on top of the joists)? Would that have made your floor any more impervious to moister problems? I did that in my bath so I could do radiant floor heat and really lke the results.

anon, cheap tub cracked under normal use. it was properly shimmed, supported and installed. the crack started after about a year. i didn't take it seriously cause it seemed to not be all the way through--it was all the way through. new tub is old time cast iron. i considered the slab but ceilings are low and lowering the floor joists to accommodate isn't reasonable. i'm installing hardi-board on thin-set then vinyl commercial tile--sorted..
